The Mansfield Park Shawl

Hello Loverlies!

It's time to show you my second completed project for the 2014-2015 YOP! I've affectionately dubbed this the "Mansfield Park Shawl" because of the lush variants of green and blue, not to mention my undying addiction to all things Jane Austen inspired!

I started out with a very basic garter stitch pattern, after casting off there was no denying the simple beauty of this project. But something was missing... so I added some simple stranded color work. The end result is simply stunning!

So as promised, here's how you can make your own!

Things needed:

  • Size 7 circular needles (3 pair)--- You'll be picking up a lot of stitches for your border! Maintain the calm, don't freak out just yet!
  • 4 skeins of  worsted weight yarn (1 in your contrast color and 3 in your main color) I used Red Heart Supersaver colors in Real Teal and Glow Worm.
  • Tape measure
  • Tapestry needle, crochet hook, or some other way to weave in your ends.
  • Steam Iron to lightly press your finished border to prevent curling.
Let's get busy!

You will make the garter stitch body first! This is probably the easiest pattern you'll ever use.
After a few rows you should start to see it take shape!
  • Using your main color cast on 1 stitch, knit that stitch turn your work!
  •  Make a stitch by doing a yarn over, knit to the end of your row!
Follow this pattern until you reach the desired measurements and cast off. Mine is approximately 28" long and 40" wide!

Working the Border:

Now that you have the body of your shawl complete, it's time to add your decorative color work border!
  • Still using your MC pick up a stitch from every row (in my case this would be around 175 stitches per side!) Once you hit your half-way point you're going to need your second circular needle to accommodate more stitches.
  • After you're finished picking up stitches Knit a row around your triangle!
  • Switch to your CC, Knit a row and then purl the next!
You are now ready to start the color work! You will work this chart over the next 13 rows to make up your pattern. Be sure to put two CC stitches between each motif! You should end up with eleven motifs per side, however it's perfectly fine if you end up with more or less. Mine actually has 14 on one side and 12 on the other, but it isn't that noticeable!

After you work the chart work an additional two rows in stockinette stitch. Switch back to MC and work a row in garter stitch. Cast off and lightly press the border with a steam iron to prevent curling! Enjoy the luxurious feel of your very own Mansfield Park Shawl!

So try it out and let me know how yours turned out! I'd love to see your creativity!

Happy Crafting!!!
