Knitting+Mary Tyler Moore
It's that time of year when we are trying to keep cool. We adorn ourselves in tank tops and shorts, with a Popsicle in hand we head out to the shade tree or pool trying to beat the heat! We aren't usually thinking of things like mittens and cozy hats, let alone knitting... The mere idea of yarn in this Arkansas humidity would be enough to turn most stomachs, but not mine! No! Never! Knitter 4 Life=Me!
For me the summertime is the perfect time to catch up on some projects that will be gifted to family and friends later on in the year. Birthdays, Christmas... this is the time to start the stash-busting! Thinking ahead is the way to ensure ultimate gifting bliss (not to mention the lack of hand cramps)! That being said I got a head start some of the gift items for a dear friend's birthday! It's also the perfect time to get my fix of the Mary Tyler Moore show!
For as long as I can remember I've always adored MTM. I mean, c'mon, who didn't? She had spunk and if there's one thing that a woman today needs it's spunk!
This item is an "All-Day Beret" from Debbie Stroller's "Stitch Nation"!
Okay, when I first saw this hat I couldn't help but think of the beret that Mary Tyler Moore donned in the opening credits of the MTM Show! I knew right then that I must knit this classy hat as my next project!
Okay, now that I have the MTM theme song "Love is all around" successfully stuck in my head, let's get on with the review!
It's worked from bottom to top on circular needles, and was actually a pretty quick project! It only had me busy for a day and, give or take, a few hours!
I used Red Heart SS in Burgundy which was pretty rough to work with as far as scratchiness goes. I've never had a problem with that type of yarn before so it must have been the dye lot or something. Anyway... So to soften it up I found some great ideas on Pinterest like washing the kitted garment in shampoo then letting it soak a while before saturating conditioner to sections of the item and finally spin drying it.
But this blog post is not about the yarn so much as it is about the pattern! Yes! Debbie Stroller has created a beanie that has just the right amount of slouch with a lovely diagonal eyelet pattern! It's an instant gratification knit because of the speed it works up in, AND I still had a little over a skein of yarn leftover!
With that in mind, of course I had to make a matching pair of fingerless mitts! I found these gorgeous Diagonal Eyelet Hand Warmers from CreativeYarn on Ravelry. They're quick and simple! Perfect for complimenting our Stitch Nation beret!
This pattern is even simpler than the beret. It's worked flat from the cuff up to the top, then sewn together leaving a small opening for the thumb gusset! The eyelet pattern is really easy to memorize!

Both of these patterns are quick and economical! They are the perfect knit for instant gratification and they use less than a skein of yarn! They will have you coming back for more! I'll definitely be whipping up a few more of these beauties for Christmas, birthdays and donations!
I give both of these patterns 5/5 stars!
So there you have it, projects 3&4 for the new yop! What are you crafting? As always I'd love to see your creativity! Knit or crochet a pattern lately? Tell me about it! Let's spread the craftiness around the world!
Happy Crafting!
